2SITLGBQ+ Family Planning Weekend Intensive: Explore practical pathways to parenthood and strategies for achieving our visions of kinship and family. Ask questions, gather information, make decisions, and build community as you explore practical, medical, legal, financial, spiritual, social, emotional, ethical, relational and intersectional issues related to bringing children (littles) into our lives.
This weekend intensive is for people who are in or are considering various family structures, and whose identities are not often celebrated or supported in mainstream family narratives. This could include (but is not limited to) single, poly, co-parents, two-spirit, gender queer, trans, trans-feminine, trans-masculine, bisexual, pansexual, omni-sexual, asexual, aromantic, dyke, butch, femme, boi, gay, queer, our partners and more.
In addressing the complex ways our communities come to parenthood, we seek to centre navigating our obligations and responsibilities as future parents in a settler colonial, anti-Black racist and oppressive world. We recognize the hopes and challenges of coming together to explore our individual experiences and coping strategies in the face of various oppressions in our lives and family planning journeys.
The Topics Include
- Getting Grounded: Ideas of family, lifestyle changes, pathways to parenthood
- Fertility awareness and insemination procedures
- The search for sperm and eggs
- Navigating fertility clinic systems and unknown donors
- Donor relationships and known donors
- Adoption, Fostering
- Intro to Surrogacy
- Co-parenting, multi-parent, single-parent families
- Kinship struggles and models
- Legal Issues, Birth registration, Family law
- Self-Advocacy: Building our confidence and our communities
- Next Steps
We do this through presentations, panels and small group discussions. Course content adapts to the interests of the group.
The weekend format is offered to make courses more accessible to people who are outside Toronto. In each weekend session, approximately half of participants are from outside the Greater Toronto Area. The weekend model can be an intense experience. Please consider what you may need for self-care over the weekend, including time for rest and reflection.
For more detailed information about the courses, check out the courses page.
