Date(s) - October 17, 2018
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Sherbourne Health Centre
This course is the first of its kind. Based on feedback from past participants and the community, we
are offering this NEW 8 Week course for members of the LGBT2SQ+ community, specifically
Indigenous peoples, Black peoples and People of Colour (IBPOC). While all are encouraged to
attend, we will be prioritizing the participation, voices and experiences of IBPOC community
members wanting to explore options to start a family.
Come and join us to learn about practical pathways to parenthood and strategies for achieving our
visions of kinship and family. Ask questions, gather information, make decisions, and build
community as you explore practical, medical, legal, financial, spiritual, social, emotional, ethical,
relational and intersectional issues related to bringing children (littles) into our lives.
This course is for people who are in or are considering various family structures, and whose
identities are not often celebrated or supported in mainstream family narratives. This could include
(but is not limited to) single, poly, co-parents, two-spirit, gender queer, trans, trans-feminine,
trans-masculine, bisexual, pansexual, omni-sexual, asexual, aromantic, dyke, butch, femme, boi, gay,
queer, our partners and more.
In addressing the complex ways our communities come to parenthood, we seek to centre navigating
our obligations and responsibilities as future parents in a settler colonial, anti-Black racist and
oppressive world. We recognize the hopes and challenges of coming together to explore our
individual experiences and coping strategies in the face of various oppressions in our lives and family
The Topics Include
- Getting Grounded: Ideas of family, lifestyle changes, pathways to parenthood
- Pathway to Parenthood: Fertility, Pregnancy, Sperm, Egg and Donors
- Pathway to Parenthood: Adoption, Fostering, Intro to Surrogacy
- Pathway to Parenthood: Co-parenting, multi-parent, single-parent families
- Kinship struggles and models
- Legal Issues, Birth registration, Family law
- Self-Advocacy: Building our confidence and our communities
- And more!
